Why do you not allow the booking of multiple cottages?

Higher Bowden regretfully is no longer renting multiple cottages for family groups and friends as experience has shown that 1) we are unable to meet the increasing needs of groups and 2) The impact of a group on other individual families is more often than not negative.

Higher Bowden was designed from the outset to provide quality individual cottages and facilities for families who want an enjoyable holiday in a peaceful country setting without being impacted by large groups. The largest group of people which we can accommodate is 7 (this would include a baby in a cot).

We therefore do not accept 1)Booking a cottage where an intention is to meet up with other families or friends staying in another cottage at the same time at Higher Bowden  or 2) Bookings of more than one cottage by a person on behalf of a large family group or friends.

There are now many self-catering cottage facilities in the UK which cater specifically for the larger groups removing the possible conflicts between individual families and groups staying within the same complex.

Why have an age rule on the "Under 5 playroom" ?

The playroom has been specifically designed for children who are under 5 (i.e. up to the age of 5) to have a safe place to play away from possible harm of being inadvertently knocked over by older children. All the toys in the play room have been specifically selected for children who are under 5 and older children quickly become bored with these toys. In addition older children are unable to fit in/on the ride on toys which can give rise to breakages and possible harm to the child from the broken toy.

Some parents ask whether their child who is slightly older than 5 can use the under 5's facility and our normal answer is, that if they as parents can manage their child to play safely with younger children around, then that is ok. But if the child is 6 or over (unless special circumstances exist) we explain that there is an excellent games room for the 5 and over's to use which includes table tennis, table football, pool table and 3 X-boxes setup with games suitable for all ages.

How wide are the local access roads?

We have over the years had questions concerning the local roads to Higher Bowden therefore we have provided below a few simple facts.

• We are exactly 2.6 miles from the A3122 which is the main road from Totnes to Dartmouth
• It takes on average 6 to 8 minutes to travel between Higher Bowden and the A3122.
• The single track road between the main road and Higher Bowden has a normal road surface but does have in places grass growing in the middle of the road in the mud left by tractors.
• The hedges are maintained by local farmers and can only be cut from September to end of February this is to protect all wildlife but particularly birds, through the breeding seasons (Spring and Summer).
• There are many passing places in these small side roads and the roads are never very busy - probably less than 10 cars per hour.
• The single track road is wide enough to take a full size council waste removal vehicle and lorries up to 7.5 tons which regularly make deliveries to Higher Bowden.
• Many of the young families (with pushchairs) who visit Higher Bowden make the walk to and from the beach along the side roads and thoroughly enjoy it.
