Five delightful picnic spots around Dartmouth

So we can officially say that winter is over, and that means only one thing- we’ve entered spring. This is good for a several reasons; the days become lighter for longer, the sun shines more (hopefully), and the birds begin to sing. Following the recent unsavoury weather conditions near our luxury holiday cottages Devon we can’t think of anything more enjoyable than taking a leisurely walk through some of the South West’s most scenic landscapes and enjoying a delightful picnic with all the family in these wonderful surroundings and taking in some fresh air while you’re at it.

Venford

Venford Reservoir- Great Picnic Location- Near South Devon Holiday CottagesVenford, located on the South Eastern edge of Dartmoor, is a thirty three acre reservoir that boasts an early Edwardian granite dam. You can enjoy beautiful views over the moor as well as having a good starting point for some great walks. There are picnic tables dotted around the reservoir and there’s also a trail for children too.

 

Dartmouth Castle

Our very own Dartmouth Castle, which is now in the safe hands of English Heritage, can be accessed by a pedestrian-only ferry from Dartmouth between Easter and the end of October. The castle is a popular historical interest, and is also a very popular location as a picnic spot.

 

 

Dartmeet

Dartmeet- A Great Place To Enjoy A Picnic- Near South Devon Holiday Cottages

For anyone who is familiar with the area they will know that Dartmeet is a well-known picnic spot. Right in the heart of the moor where east and west branches of the River Dart meet in a deep wooded valley. The banks are grassy and provide light shade from the sun by the ancient trees. The scenery is truly spectacular, making Dartmeet the perfect picnic spot.

 

Berry Head

Not only is Berry Head a fantastic place to have a picnic, it’s also a National Nature Reserve and is Torbay’s most important wildlife site. It is home to many rare plants who are dependent upon the thin soils, exposed conditions of the headland and mild climates.

There’s a walk to be enjoyed by everyone on a sunny day. If you do pay a visit in autumn, this is when the many migrant birds gather here and sometimes can include rare breeds, such as Alpine swifts.
