Many people who visit our holiday cottages in South Devon are golf lovers and if we were given a pound every time we were asked to recommend a local course we’d be able to provide free accommodation for all.
So as we approach the golfing season we thought we’d take a look at five local courses sure to excite any keen golfer.
Dartmouth Golf & Country Club
Dartmouth Golf & Country Club is one of Devon’s best golf courses and is also a luxurious leisure resort. It’s only a few minutes’ drive from the centre of Dartmouth and is sure to challenge any golfer.
Each of the club’s two 18 hole courses were designed by Jeremy Pern and offer all year round tees.
The sweeping fairways and superb greens all meet USPGA Championship standards and the course has even been labelled one of the top 100 hidden gems in Britain by a top golfing magazine.
Bigbury Golf Course
The iconic and spectacular cliff top course at Bigbury is guaranteed to provide a memorable day of golf.
The atmosphere at the course is famously friendly and warm and while the course is challenging it’s also forgiving. Its 18-holes cover 6000 yards, which should be covered in 70 strokes if you play to par.
The course also has stunning views in all directions, from Dartmoor in the north all the way out to sea towards Burgh Island.
Thurlestone Golf Course
Located in the iconic and beautiful South Hams, Thurlestone’s 18 hole course runs along the coast of Bigbury Bay.
The course offers a mixture of cliff top holes and links golf with fabulous views visible from every tee.
Dainton Park Golf Club
Dainton Park is one of the largest South Devon golf courses and is spread over 125 acres of rolling parkland.
The mature and spectacular 18 hole course has elevated tees which give grand views over Dartmoor National Park and the South Hams while the course’s clubhouse is a great spot to refresh yourself after a round.
Stover Golf Club
Stover was designed by five times British open champion James Braid and is one of the best in the whole of the South West.
Set in 200 acres of parkland it has a few of the most picturesque holes in the county. The holes are surrounded by miles of mature woodlands and waterways – which have been part of the course since its creation in 1894.
