Blackpool Sands, near Dartmouth

Higher Bowden's estate is close-by to the beach with Blackpool Sands (winner of the 2006 Resort Beach Award) being less than a mile away so you can book in confidence if you are looking for cottages in Devon by the beach. This is a very popular and picturesque bay with good family facilities including the award winning Venus Cafe (alfresco Mediterranean style dining experience in a UK beach setting), shop, toilets with outside showers, sailing/windsurfing tuition and boat hire, sand pits (the beach is fine shingle), and a freshwater paddling and boating pond.

It is a relaxing & picturesque 20 minute walk to the beach down a single track road alongside a babbling brook passing by a recently renovated mill from our holiday cottages by the sea in Devon.

Slapton Sands & Slapton Ley Nature Reserve

Slapton Beach, near Dartmouth Devon

Slapton Beach, near Dartmouth Devon

Three mile strip of shingle beach. A long shingle beach ideal for taking a romantic walk as well as fishing. There is a tea shop and pub at the village of Torcross to warm you up! Slapton Sands is also well known as the beach where many lives were lost during rehearsals for the D-Day landings in 1944.

Slapton Sands is also a wonderfully well kept kite surfing secret. Torcross, Slapton Beesands are the opposite side of the "start point" peninsular of the South Hams. East facing, these beaches provide an ideal kiting for all easterly wind directions from North to South.

Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve (NNR) is recognised as a wetland with an important place in Britain's natural heritage. The main feature is the Lower Ley, which is the largest natural lake in south-west England. Although it is only separated from the sea by a narrow shingle bar, it is entirely freshwater. The bar itself is of geological interest, and harbours a wealth of colourful flowers in the summer. Surrounding marshes, reed-beds and woodland add to the variety of habitats. These provide excellent feeding and breeding grounds for a rich and varied wildlife. Much is accessible by public footpath, and is a major attraction for birdwatchers and naturalists.
